Somewhere in rabbinic lit, there is a comment by a rabbi that a person should not be so in love with holding office that he is afraid to repent when he has done wrong. The lesson is to hate office (or power) and repent. It would be an excellent lesson for scholars, don't you think? Is scholarship about love of power or love of evidence and science and admitting wrong when historical misrepresentations have been made?
